Mixed media on paper on panel. 50 x 70 cm. Figures emerge from the depths, painted using alternate layers of richly coloured inks and paints. Recently I have been developing a series of drawings which reflect on classical representations of the figure, often figures physically interacting as so often found in works by Bernini and Giambologna. This series of works pursues the same humanist agend, yet the melodrama is tinged with a more contemporary sense of fragility. The physicality of the figures remains but a precariousness is more evident The materials encourage this viewing through the use of transparent layers, varied paint consistency and careful selection of brushes. The pieces sit somewhere between drawing and painting, bringing poetry to simple actions. The images are made on heavy watercolour paper, mounted on board or stretched over canvas bars. These new works are successfully finding space in open exhibitions, including the Royal Cambrian Academy and Ferens gallery in Hull. Several private clients have also purchased works from the series.
