This artwork was drawn up to scale to suit a fabric quality and were working documents used as the first stage of transferring the design onto jacquard point papers holding the weave formulas. in the margins are the original technicians' notes. Jacquard punch cards were created from the technicians' binary weave codes. The mill Vanoutryve was established in the 19th Century producing in Mills around Roubaix in France and nearby Belgium towns. It produced various woven goods including carpets, Jacquard furnishing upholstery, drapery, and lace. The mill is still trading today however faced financial difficulties in the late 20th Century. It slowly shrunk its operations but in the early ’00s, it needed to restructure. A large section of the archive was sold to a specialist international textile archive salvage company to assist in financing a new joint venture. The different styles from the archive were separated and sold on to interested weavers looking for new weave techniques as well as fabric wholesalers/Editors looking to be inspired by artefacts from the past. The Point Paper Art Company purchased several original point papers and 19th Century artworks which are now part of their own archive collection of Art from Textile History.
