Background to the printed design.
This work originates with French weaver Bergerot of Cysoing. They commissioned the jacquard point paper work in March 1972 with a weavers specialist design studio in Ghent in Flanders. The original point paper holding the technical weave codes in its colours has two panels, each with a design company stamp that is possibly ARTICAXARRERO. The artist is anonymous. The point paper was acquired in 2017 when the factory in Cysoing was being renovated after the weaver had ceased trading a few years earlier.
We believe the design was a special project, possibly a wall hanging as the design is not a typical furnishing style.
The Bergerot weaving Mill was founded in 1854 and ceased trading in 2017.
A brief background to Textile Point Papers and the binary code punched loom cards they created.
Prior to the advent of computer aided design (CAD), drawings of woven textile pattern were translated by craftsmen onto special graph paper called point papers. These detailed drawings were then coloured with the different weave plotting’s and then read by textile technicians, who cut the weaving instruction cards that were to be placed onto Jacquard looms that ‘read’ the binary code pattern. Using its mathematical settings and various coloured weave plotting’s, weavers are able to produce many different qualities of fabric each woven with a version of the design drawn on the point paper.
