Initially INSPIRED by a private commission based on my client wanting his life-sized genitals subtly ‘hidden in a tree’ in pen and wash; he wanted to know his parts were there, but a visitor to his home might not see it in the work. He bought the work and that was that.
Years before, I had had a Hysterectomy which went very badly wrong and after six operations to right the surgeon’s errors, and of his own admission and of which I had grounds to sue for a large sum, I needed to deal with much trauma to my mind and body. So after much deliberation, I wondered how I could develop this work to help me heal from the agonies I’d been through…being sent home with weeping wounds, having to self-catheterize every couple of hours for months on end. I will not share all of my experiences in written form but I hope that you will understand from my artworks on paper how this artistic cathartic healing helped me deal with everything. I illustrated 69 and won’t be doing any more! (F.Y.I. - I didn’t sue!)
I feel blessed that I met this client in the studio that day as he sparked a creative avenue for my expression, but not in pen and wash, but in line and dots; hence the series’ title.
In some of the paintings, I have painted small teasy objects within the land or hanging from the branches, e.g., a red stiletto, a set of pink fluffy handcuffs, a mask or intriguingly my own middle finger print in red which is rather like a trademark but in fact it is my middle finger gesture to the clumsy surgeon!
I didn’t pencil sketch these out first, they just evolved from good planning in my head. My confident use of lines and dots creates a sense of depth, shape, tone and distortion, enabling the viewer to search for where the next line or dot may lead. Most of this work is deliberately rotational or is worthy of being tilted in order to ‘find something else’, from a flaccid penis tree root to a strong erect trunk; with plump fleshy vulvas to leaf-like pubic mounds; voluptuous breasts and torsos surrounded by sperm-like grasses within the branches.
In my eyes, the work is tasteful, delicate, even pretty, arousing interest and curiosity. The work is so subtle that one has to really look to find provocation in the landscape. The more one looks and studies, the more one sees! Admittedly they could possibly be controversial pieces, depending on one’s views on several issues, from sex, body image, childbirth, gender (LGBTQ), relationships, promiscuity, frigidity…basically, LIFE, to name but a few. I have found this work fits with a variety of viewer’s own experiences.
I’m very proud that this work is well published and exhibited in the UK and abroad and has won awards, this work is edgy, quirky, earthy, back to nature, very different but most definitely NOT of erotic genre although some would disagree; to me it’s all about self-expression and cathartic healing. I hope the work brings a sense of fascination to you.
